LAOS TRAVEL
With its laid-back atmosphere and faded colonial charm, Laos seems like a step back in time. Travelers are seduced by the blend of lush mountains, winding waterways, and beautiful temples that fill the landscape. Whether you have a few days or several weeks, the richness of culture in this unspoiled country is sure to leave you mesmerized.
Luang Prabang is the spiritual capital of the country and any Laos travel itinerary should include a visit to this northern city. Flanked by the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers and surrounded by green rolling hills, there is hardly a more picturesque place in Southeast Asia. The town center is filled with Buddhist temples and colonial buildings. It is not unusual to see orange-robed monks milling about the town on their way to and from the temples. Nor is it unusual for the friendly locals to greet you with a warm smile and a ‘sabaidii’, hello in the Lao language. Local craftshops and a spectacular night market display the traditional handicrafts of Laos while the town’s fabulous restaurants and cooking courses are a gourmand’s delight! For a different perspective, climb to the top of Phousi Hill or take a boat ride along the Mekong River. Travel to the Pak Ou caves to see its thousands of Buddha images, venture out to the cascading waterfalls of Kuang Si, or embark on an elephant ride through the jungle- all of which are easy day trips from Luang Prabang.
Vientiane is Southeast Asia’s sleepiest capital - a quiet blend of temples and markets slowly moving forward in to the modern era. The city stretches along the banks of the Mekong River which come alive at night with street stalls and local bars. During the day time, there are beautiful temples to explore as well as the somewhat bizarre Patuxay, modeled on Paris’ Arc de Triomphe. Vientiane is home to Laos’ most revered monument, That Luang, whose golden spire rises dramatically in to the sky. The city is small enough to be explored on bicycle or on foot, a pleasant change from the sprawl of other modern capitals.
The Mekong River meanders its way down the country linking Laos to neighboring Thailand and Cambodia. In the far south the river reaches its widest point and dozens of small islands and sandbanks appear giving the region the name ‘Siphandon’, which means 4000 Islands. This area is home to some of the most laid-back rural villages in the country as well as the Khmer-era temple of Wat Phou. Conversely, in the far northeast, mountains dominate the landscape. Of particular note is the town of Xam Neau where limestone cliffs and caves served as hide-outs during the battles of the 1970s. Further evidence of this violent era of Lao history can be seen in Phonsavan, one of the most heavily bombed areas of the country. It is also home to the mysterious Plain of Jars, a collection of fields littered with enigmatic stone vessels.
Being one of the least densely-populated countries on earth, Laos is filled with unspoiled wilderness. For eco and adventure lovers, Laos travel offers an endless array of options. The far north, around Luang Nam Tha, is filled with trekking trails and remote hill tribe villages waiting to be explored. Or trek in Southern Laos where the Bolavan Plateau creates a spectacular backdrop for outdoor adventures. Even outside of the capital city there are natural getaways where you can search for native animal life or seek out elusive orchid plants.
Whether for a quick journey or a long traverse of the country from north to south, Exotissimo can help with your Laos travel plans. With our team of experts and in-depth knowledge of the country we can design the perfect tour for you!
